This painting demonstrates how to properly consolidate light tonal passages and dark tonal passages.  James Gurney calls this compositional technique shape welding, but the idea has been around since the 1400s.  The practice of unifying light passages and unifying dark passages is actually one of the major traits of Renaissance and Baroque art, distinguishing the art of these periods from the less organized compositions of Bosch and Bruegel which precede the Renaissance, and from Rococo which follows it.
