LinkedIn shines a spotlight on small companies whose past employees have become industry leaders

LinkedIn broadcasts an individual’s work history to the public. If I see that a well-run company’s CEO or art director put in his or her formative years at company Y, then company Y looks like a shining star that not only hires, but helps form industry leaders. Of course, it may truly be the case that an employee left company Y because he or she was unhappy with the culture there, but LinkedIn is not a place where people publicize their reasons for leaving past companies, nor is it a place where people exclude from their resumes those companies that were a bad fit for their talents. Consequently, companies can now build a reputation on the success of their past employees just as universities build a reputation on the success of their alumni.
